Movement is extremely important in a fight for your life. Get off the X. The attack will be aimed at where you were standing. Taking just one step will require your attacker to reassess his or her course of action.

While you, having trained and prepared for this decision, will be moving, an assailant will have to take many steps to catch up. First the aggressor will have to see that you are moving. Then he or she will have to realize what you are doing and decide what to do as a result. All of that happens before an attacker even reacts, giving you about a one-second gap.
