Tuff Writer’s Flamed Titanium Pen offers a writing instrument ten times as tough as it is good looking. Measuring 6 inches in length and half an inch thick, this pen weighs 2.1 ounces and, thanks to its Grade 5 / 6AL4V medical-grade Titanium construction, will likely never break or fail. As such, while no one really calls it a tactical pen, it certainly qualifies as one. A mighty good one, at that. Why else create something as tough and durable?

A word about Titanium. According to Tuff Writer, it is “45 percent lighter than steel, 60 percent heavier than aluminum and more than three times stronger than either of them.” Add Titanium’s corrosion resistance and exceptional durability and the answer becomes clear.

Tough, defined. We’re not just talking about the barrel of the pen being tough because it is machined out of a block of solid Titanium. Even the metal clip that holds it to your pants or shirt pocket is made from Titanium. Moreover, a machined cam advancing system offers a robust means of exposing the ink tip and retracting it and, regardless of whether it is in or out, the tip of the pen, also made from Grade 5 Titanium, makes for a formidable strike weapon — especially if your thumb is over the opposite end, providing leverage.

And good looking. Google “tactical pens” and you’ll get mostly tactical-looking black pens. After a while, they all start to look the same. They’re not bad looking, by any stretch; in fact, they’re not out to make a fashion statement other than “I’ll hurt you.” But if you like a little bit of flash or zing in your personal accessories, or, if you want to minimize the tactical, the “flamed” Tuff Writer makes a unique choice. The finish on this pen is called “multi-color-flame anodized” and, besides being an attractive feature, also results in a very durable “alpha-case skin.” On top of that is a “hydrophobic polymer nano-resin (not a wax)” which seals and protects the finish. Granted, the Tuff Writer attracts attention in a different way from the typical black tactical pen. Instead of “Whoa, that’s one tough looking pen,” now I get “Wow, that’s a great looking pen!” In either case, I’m not into drawing attention to myself (pun intended) but you might as well know how these pens strike people (pun intended).

Writes well. With a Fisher Space Pen Pressurized Ink Cartridge on board, you can of course write nice, smooth lines, letters, numbers and what not, but you can also do so upside down (or ink tip straight up) and under water. The former is somewhat useful to me; the latter, never. But it’s great ink and writes well. Besides Fisher, you can load the Tuff Writer with different cartridges from Foray, Parker, Schmidt or Franklin-Christoph. One of the mightiest of pens, this Tuff Writer retails for $215.
