In a recent episode of Into the Fray, I suggested switching to the slingshot method of running the slide. To say that sparked a lot of feedback would be an understatement. There appears to be plenty of strong opinions, especially in regards to Type 1 Malfunctions and the use of the slide lock/slide release for slide operation.
Let’s focus on the malfunction element first. The standard immediate action drill is the “Tap, Rack, Roll.” Some have claimed that using the slingshot method offers a disadvantage when performing an immediate action drill. I disagree. It is possible to roll the pistol and allow gravity to help clear the malfunction while still using the slingshot method. If you are right-handed, just rotate the pistol counter-clockwise past 90 degrees. Some may even find this more comfortable and effective than rolling the pistol clockwise. Give it a try and see how it works for you.
As for using the slide lock/slide release to allow the slide to go forward, there are still plenty of questions, both pro and con, surrounding that. The first big one revolves around the fact that you may need to operate the slide when it is forward. In that case, whether or not to use the lever is moot. When the slide is locked fully to the rear for an out-of-battery reload, you have some options. Feel free to discuss them below in the comments section.
Remember, we are teaching “a” way, not “the” way. If there is a better way, consider giving it a try.
