Hearing noises outside his home early one evening, a Denver man took his pistol with him when he went to investigate. He found an intruder trying to break into the home through a window. Fearing for his life, the homeowner fired on the burglar, wounding him and stopping the incident. A Corinth couple was awakened about 1 a.m. by sounds of a break-in. The 61-year-old intruder entered the home and confronted the couple, despite their taking up a pistol and shouting that they were armed. In the ensuing altercation, the burglar was shot three times and driven from the home, where he collapsed from his injuries. Responding authorities transported him to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead. Police are not charging the homeowner for his self-defense, though all fatal shootings are referred to a grand jury for their determination.

After rifling through a truck and stealing a quantity of lawn implements, a thief forced his way into a Sultan home and knifed a 75-year-old man who tried to stop him in the stomach. The homeowner’s 80-year-old wife responded to the commotion in time to see the attacker standing over her wounded and bleeding husband. When the attacker started after her, the wife ran to her bedroom to get a pistol, with which she shot the assailant three times, killing him. Police are investigating the case, which will be reviewed by county prosecutors who will decide whether charges will be brought against the defending housewife.

A North Charleston man was in a local bar when he was accosted by another man who pulled a gun and threatened him. Wanting to avoid trouble, the threatened man left the bar, but the assailant and another man followed him to his car and continued making threats. When the assailant started to pull his gun again, the victim, fearing for his life, drew his own pistol and fired on the assailant, hitting him and putting him to flight. Charges have yet to be filed while police investigate the incident.

An Odessa man heard sounds of a break-in at his residence early in the morning and went to investigate. That’s when a man forcibly entered the residence and rushed the homeowner. Fearing for his life and to protect his family, the homeowner fired at the invader several times, killing him and ending the attack. Only after the police investigation did the homeowner discover that his attacker was drunk and likely had tried to enter the wrong house, thinking it was his own. Police are still investigating the incident, which will be referred to the district attorney for a final determination of charges.
